Canadian singer Justin Bieber was named MTV Video Music Awards 'Performer of the Year' on Sunday.
Bieber said the past year had been challenging for everyone, including the coronavirus pandemic, and gave special thanks to his wife Hailey Bieber, whom they married this year.
Ariana Grande, Amala Dlamini, Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, Olivia Rodrigo and Taylor Swift also vied with the Canadian pop singer for the award.
In addition, the Canadian's collaboration with Dezmann Evans and Ashton Simmonds (Daniel Caesar) titled Peaches won best in the Pop category.
Also, Lil Nas X (Montero Hill) with his music video Montero won the MTV Video Music Awards (MTV VMA) in the most prestigious category "Video of the Year".
The channel, which turned 40 in August, returned to its original format this year with the awards taking place in the indoor Barclays Center sports arena in Brooklyn and with fans attending.
The MTV Video Music Awards were launched by the music channel MTV in 1984 and have gone on to become one of the most prestigious awards in the video music industry. Winners are traditionally presented with statuettes in the form of an astronaut wearing a spacesuit and carrying a flag with the channel's logo on it.
