The Golden Globes will not be broadcast live in 2022

There will be no online ceremony

The organisers of the Golden Globe Awards will not be broadcasting the statuettes ceremony, which will take place next Sunday. This was reported by Deadline magazine on Thursday, citing a spokesman for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

"This year's event will be private and will not be broadcast live," the magazine quoted a representative of the association, whose members are traditionally involved in determining the winners of the award. He assured that information about the winners will be posted in real time on the award website and social media, and the full list of winners will be available to all who want to know at the end of the hour and a half event.

As well as dropping the broadcast, the HFPA has also reduced the format of the ceremony itself. Neither the nominees, journalists nor guests of honour have been invited. Only certain HFPA members and selected grantees of the association will attend the ceremony, provided they have been vaccinated with at least three doses of coronavirus drug and have a negative PCR test result.

In February 2021, the Los Angeles Times reported on the complete absence of black representatives from the jury of the award, for which the HFPA was heavily criticised by the expert community and the film industry.

NBC, which has traditionally broadcast the Golden Globes, said it would not do so in 2022 because the jury of 87 journalists did not sufficiently reflect the diversity of American society. It has been suggested that the broadcast could be made by the organisers themselves on the awards website. Deadline's sources claim that NBC did not oppose such an option, but the HFPA rejected it.

NBC had previously said that the broadcaster would resume broadcasting the Golden Globes from 2023, provided the organisers make changes to the jury. It was announced in October that the jury was renewed and expanded by 21 members, including six black journalists. The HFPA also created a new position of diversity officer and amended its code of conduct.

The Golden Globe Award, presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is an annual award for journalists from all over the world.
