AOC Tops Bluesky Charts
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has become the first person to reach one million followers on Bluesky, marking a milestone for the platform as it gains traction among users seeking alternatives to traditional social media giants. Bluesky confirmed the achievement on Monday, noting that aside from its own official account, no other user has hit this landmark yet.
Bluesky, created in 2019 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, was envisioned as a “protocol for public conversation.” Its structure closely mirrors Twitter's, offering features like direct messaging and curated feeds, but it also strives to create a more community-focused environment. This approach appears to be resonating with users, particularly Democrats and left-leaning individuals, who have been leaving X (formerly Twitter) in large numbers in recent weeks.
Ocasio-Cortez addressed this growing migration in a post on Bluesky, stating, “People are leaving because it’s not fun anymore, and no one is obligated to be on a platform they don’t enjoy. It’s not rocket science.”
The dissatisfaction with X stems from changes implemented under Elon Musk’s ownership, which critics argue have negatively impacted user experience. Bluesky, on the other hand, offers a fresh alternative that is quickly gaining momentum. CEO Jay Graber shared in a recent CNN interview that the platform has been onboarding around one million new users daily over the past week.
“A lot of people are saying they’re having a lot more fun here,” Graber remarked. “They’re making friends online again and experiencing something they haven’t in years. It’s an environment where people feel connected.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s success on Bluesky is symbolic of a broader shift in the social media landscape. As users increasingly seek out platforms that emphasize connection and enjoyment, Bluesky's rise suggests a growing appetite for spaces that prioritize community over controversy.
With its surging popularity and endorsement from prominent figures like Ocasio-Cortez, Bluesky could be poised to redefine the digital conversation in a way that reclaims the original spirit of social networking.
