Replacing plastic bottles with paper bottles
Coca-Cola intends to sell its first paper-bottled beverage this summer, according to a company press release.
It says the "innovative packaging format" will be tested in Hungary and will sell the plant-based drink Adez. The company's first-ever paper-bottled drink will be available to just two thousand consumers.
"Trials of the paper bottle prototype are planned in Hungary in the second quarter of 2021. Two thousand 250ml bottles of AdeZ will be offered to consumers by one of Hungary's fastest-growing online grocery shops", said a statement on Coca-Cola Europe's website.
Coca-Cola unveiled a prototype of its paper bottle in Brussels last year, but the project will now move into a "crucial phase of consumer testing". The aim is to determine how such packaging performs and how consumers react.
According to the company, the current paper packaging prototype, developed with Danish start-up Paboco (Paper Bottle Company), still contains a small amount of plastic, but the plastic layer inside the bottle is planned to be phased out in the future.
As Coca-Cola points out, the company is committed to implementing its World Without Waste strategy.
