UFC Noche Ticket Crisis
The UFC is preparing to pay tribute to Mexico with a special event on September 14, 2023. UFC Noche, hosted in Las Vegas, features a highly anticipated bantamweight title bout between Sean O'Malley and Merab Dvalishvili. Although both fighters are bringing their best to the octagon, the event’s lineup has not entirely won over fans. Among the other main attractions is Mexico’s Alexa Grasso facing off against Valentina Shevchenko for the women’s flyweight title.
Despite these high-caliber matchups, the fight card hasn’t lived up to the "once in a lifetime" hype surrounding the event, set to take place at the state-of-the-art Las Vegas Sphere. This has prompted UFC President Dana White and his team to make significant adjustments to ticket prices to stimulate sales. According to recent reports, ticket prices have been slashed by up to 83%, after struggles to sell tickets for what was anticipated to be a marquee event.
The original ticket prices, which started at a staggering $3,000, proved to be a barrier for many fans. Critics have pointed out that for significantly less—around $500 — fans could instead attend Canelo Alvarez's bout against Edgar Berlanga, a fight that resonates strongly with the Latino community.
The pricing reduction was highlighted by UFC welterweight Gilbert Burns, who revealed the extent of the cuts on his podcast's Twitter page. Burns commented, "For people saying 'there's still $3,000 tickets.' Those were the cheapest tickets available and nose bleeds. Now $3,000 gets you almost to the floor."
In addition to fan concerns about the fight card, industry insiders revealed that UFC Noche's tickets were the priciest in UFC history. Ticketmaster listed prices as high as $11,507 for floor seats, while secondary marketplaces, like TickPick, saw listings up to $55,902.
Dana White had previously projected that the event could generate $25 to $30 million in revenue, investing more than $20 million into the event’s production. However, with the drastic reduction in ticket prices, it remains to be seen whether the UFC can recover from this gamble or if this marks a significant loss on Mexican Independence Day.
As ticket sales continue to be a point of contention, all eyes are on UFC Noche to see if the newly adjusted prices will lead to a packed arena — or if this event will be a costly misstep for the UFC.
