New processor from AMD

AMD has unveiled next-generation Ryzen mobile processors with enhanced performance for gamers and professional tasks, which will start shipping in the first quarter of 2021. AMD expects 50% growth in notebook and PC processor shipments this year.

According to AMD, the new Ryzen 5000 Series CPUs deliver the highest performance and incredible battery life "in its class" and are designed for laptop and desktop gamers and professional use.

AMD has also announced Ryzen PRO 5000 series processors for enterprise notebook PCs that perform complex technical tasks such as digital content creation and big data analytics. Ryzen PRO 5000 Series processors with 16 to 64 cores also include advanced AMD PRO security technology, and are expected to be available on shop shelves in March 2021.

AMD and its major customers expect strong demand for new PCs and notebooks in 2021, given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and strong trends towards remote working and learning. AMD noted that around 300 million laptops, desktops and Chromebooks using the company's chips were sold in 2020, the highest number since 2014.

Lisa Su said: "We expect demand to be even higher in 2021 as PCs continue to play an increasing role in our daily lives".

In a press release, manufacturers such as HP Inc., ASUS and Lenovo shared their expectations of strong consumer demand.

Su also highlighted AMD's growing presence in the high-performance computing market during her speech on Tuesday. It announced third-generation Epyc server processors codenamed Milan. The new processors should be available closer to the end of the current quarter.

AMD has managed to capitalise on rival Intel's (INTC) manufacturing crisis in 2020 to gain some of its share of the PC and data centre processor market. AMD also competes with Nvidia (NVDA) in the market for graphics processors, gaming consoles and data centre chips.
