The world's richest man
Tesla CEO Elon Musk has become the richest businessman in the world. Musk's rise in shares in the electric-car maker has led the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which tracks the fortunes of the richest people online, overtaking Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Bloomberg estimates Musk's fortune at $188.5 billion, $1.5 billion more than Bezos.
CNBC also estimates Musk has become the richest man in the world. The broadcaster estimates his fortune at $184 billion. Bezos, CNBC reminds us, has topped the billionaire rankings since 2017. In 2020, Tesla shares have risen by 743% and its capitalisation has surpassed $600 billion. The stock continues to rise in value in 2021. On January 7, the electric car maker's securities added another 4.8% in value in stock trading.
Since the beginning of 2020, Elon Musk's fortune has grown by almost $150 billion due to the growth of Tesla shares. Bloomberg estimates that this could be considered the fastest growth in the businessman's fortune in recent history.
Also, Bloomberg notes that Jeff Bezos would be ahead of Musk in the ranking of the richest people in the world if not for his divorce from writer MacKenzie Scott, to whom he gave a significant stake in the divorce. MacKenzie Scott decided to donate the divorce proceeds to charity.
