Vaccination card in Wallet
Apple, Inc. has decided to distribute digital copies of covid-19 vaccination cards to Apple's Wallet app for users to send to businesses and locations. In a statement released Tuesday, the company said the feature will be available in "Upcoming software updates."
The image on the digital card contains the QR code, full name, issuer, vaccine name, 1st and 2nd inoculation date.
According to 9to5Mac whether or not users will be able to take advantage of this change depends on what state they are in and what their healthcare provider is.
A number of issuers are already using an Apple-compatible framework to provide verified vaccination records,
iOS 15 was released on Monday, and an Apple developer blog post published on Tuesday explained how iPhone users can download and store verifiable medical records, such as COVID-19 immunizations and test results, in the phone's Health app.
These changes come as more US cities are requiring people to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination in the workplace or in order to eat at restaurants, go to concerts, etc.
On Tuesday, Engadget reported that the Silicon Valley giant will not have access to imported or shared records, that all information must be encrypted and stored securely when transferred elsewhere, and that Apple cannot see a user's vaccination card or how it was used.
More than 182 million people in the US are fully vaccinated and more than 684,000 Americans have died from the COVID-19 pandemic.
