Ruto Drives Tech Progress
President William Ruto made a strong case for the integration of technology into national governance during the 79th UN General Assembly in New York. While addressing global issues like sustainable development, climate action, and global governance, Ruto also highlighted Kenya’s proactive approach to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) for national progress.
The Role of AI in Kenya's Development
At the U.S.-Kenya Business and Investment Roundtable, President Ruto spoke on Kenya’s innovative use of AI, particularly in key sectors like education, agriculture, and healthcare. He explained how AI is being utilized to streamline processes and ensure that resources reach those who need them most.
"We are leveraging AI to do two very important things," Ruto explained. "One, we use AI in our means-testing instruments for distributing education money to beneficiaries. AI helps us determine the financial status of each parent, ensuring the right support reaches the right families."
In agriculture, AI is helping to desegregate the distribution of fertilizers to farmers, ensuring that government support is targeted based on data-driven needs. Additionally, AI is playing a critical role in Kenya's universal health coverage program by identifying beneficiaries who require government support for healthcare services.
Building a Legal Framework for AI
Recognizing the importance of responsible AI use, President Ruto reassured the audience that Kenya is already developing legislation to regulate AI applications in education, agriculture, and other sectors. He emphasized that this legal framework is making its way through Parliament, ensuring that AI is used ethically and for the benefit of all Kenyans.
Ruto’s focus on AI reflects Kenya’s broader commitment to harnessing emerging technologies for inclusive growth, setting an example for other nations in the digital economy.
