Fighting crime
US President Joe Biden has unveiled a new strategy for the US administration to tackle the rise in gun crime, which includes hiring more police officers. On Monday, the US leader held a meeting at the White House with law enforcement officials, as well as federal and local authorities, on the subject.
According to the President, the plan, firstly, includes measures to combat the circulation of illegal weapons, which are sold in violation of federal law.
"Second, it's about supporting local law enforcement with the federal funds they need", Biden explained.
"Our strategy provides, among other things, funding for law enforcement so that states and cities have the ability to hire more police officers and pay them overtime to improve policing in local communities", the politician added.
Biden has previously called acts of gun violence in the US a veritable epidemic and an international disgrace. He said they cost the state $280 billion annually.
The right to buy and bear arms is guaranteed to Americans by the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. Because of the repeated incidents of mass shootings of citizens by miscreants in the country in recent years, the debate has intensified on what measures should be taken to tighten gun control. In recent years, the US federal authorities have repeatedly attempted such measures, but so far they have been unsuccessful.
