Rebounding cooperation with the USA
The EU is seeking a new alliance with the United States following the resignation of President Donald Trump, as well as to respond to Chinese challenges, the Financial Times reported.
The newspaper refers to a draft document that is due to be considered at the EU summit on 10-11 December. It is proposed to hold an EU-US summit in the first half of 2021 and present a plan for new transatlantic cooperation.
The plan provides for the re-establishment of links in all areas of EU cooperation with the United States, including the fight against coronavirus and the creation of vaccines, regulation in cyberspace and the environment.
Relations between the United States and Europe were quite tense under Trump. Europe, the publication notes, "experienced relief" from the results of the American elections. The EU and most of the block states congratulated Joe Biden, who declared himself the winner.
At the same time, the EU plans to step up its response to the "challenges" from China.
"As open democratic societies and market economies, the EU and the US agree that China's growing international self-confidence is a strategic challenge, even if we don't always agree on the best way to tackle it", the Financial Times quotes the draft document as saying.
