US action film Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise, drama Aftersun by British director Charlotte Wells and Tar by Todd Field were among the best foreign films in 2022.
Second in the ranking is Aftersun, Charlotte Wells' feature directorial debut. The reviewer has a 98% freshness rating and Wells is also Industry Portal's Indiewire picks her film of the year.
In third place is Tar, a musical drama starring Cate Blanchett, the first film directed by Todd Field after a 16-year hiatus. The film was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Picture and Blanchett for Best Actress in a Drama Film.
Also in the "Absolute Top" of the best foreign films of the year are "The Banshees of Inisherin" by Martin McDonagh, "EO" by Jerzy Skolimowski, "Everything Everywhere All At Once" by directors Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan, "No Bears" by Jafar Panahi, the horror film "Nope" by Jordan Peele and "Happening" by Audrey Diwan. The most recent film on the ranking list is the detective thriller Decision to Leave by South Korean director Park Chan-wook.
The ranking of the best foreign films of the year is based on data from 22 different sources with a combined monthly reach of more than 1.5 billion people, as well as box office returns and online sales.
