Diaz Eyes Sequel
Cameron Diaz, who famously dazzled audiences in her breakout role as Tina Carlyle in The Mask, is open to revisiting the iconic character but there’s a catch. The Back in Action star, 52, revealed her interest in a sequel, hinging on one crucial factor: the return of her co-star, Jim Carrey.
“If Jim’s on board I mean, I’ve been riding those coattails from day one,” Diaz joked in an interview with Access Hollywood.
The 1994 hit propelled Diaz to stardom as she played opposite Carrey’s Stanley Ipkis, a timid bank clerk who discovers a magical mask that unleashes a mischievous alter ego. The film not only became a cultural phenomenon but also marked the start of Diaz’s meteoric rise in Hollywood.
While Carrey, now 63, remains noncommittal about reprising his role, he has hinted that the right concept could sway him. Reflecting on 30 years since The Mask during a 2024 interview with ComicBook.com, Carrey mused, “It’s not really about the money… but as soon as a good idea comes your way… things tend to change.”
For Diaz, the idea of stepping back into the spotlight is more than just a career decision. After dominating the ‘90s and early 2000s with hits like There’s Something About Mary, My Best Friend’s Wedding, and Charlie’s Angels, she surprised fans by taking a step back from acting in 2014.
The hiatus, however, was a deliberate choice. Speaking on The Graham Norton Show, Diaz reflected on how the break allowed her to embrace family life. She and husband Benji Madden, who she married in 2015, are parents to two children: daughter Raddix, born in 2019, and son Cardinal, welcomed in 2024.
“It was the best 10 years of my life,” Diaz shared, noting that the time off “made sense” for her growing family. Yet now, after a decade away, Diaz is reigniting her passion for storytelling and the magic of cinema.
“It’s a privilege to do this,” she told Graham Norton. “If I just let this go, all of this goodwill, all of this which I got to build over so much time I would be a fool.”
Currently starring alongside Jamie Foxx in Netflix’s Back in Action, Diaz’s return has been met with excitement from fans eager to see her light up the screen once again. And with the possibility of a Mask sequel lingering, Diaz’s next chapter could revisit her very first role where it all began.
