Bowen Yang is an American actor, comedian, writer, and podcaster of Australian-Chinese descent. His journey from the son of Chinese immigrants, who as a child would rig an antenna in his basement to catch a fuzzy signal of Saturday Night Live, to one of America's most recognizable comedians is a story of triumph, perseverance, and a refusal to be sidelined. Early Life and Education

Bowen Yang was born on November 6, 1990, in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, to a family that emigrated from China in the 1980s. His father, Ruilin Yang, grew up in rural Inner Mongolia in a straw and mud hut and worked as an explosives engineer for the mining company Orica. His mother, Meng Yang, trained as an obstetrician in China and later worked in medical diagnostics. Yang has an older sister.

When Yang was six months old, the family moved from Australia to Canada, settling in Brossard, a suburb of Montreal, Quebec. While living there, the Yang family attended the Just for Laughs festival every year, which Yang later called his "first exposure to what different kinds of comedy sort of converging at the same point looked like." In 1999, when Yang was nine, the family relocated to the United States, settling in Aurora, Colorado. His parents ensured he grew up in contact with Chinese culture, sending him to Chinese school on Sundays and speaking Mandarin at home. Yang has recalled having to adjust his basement television antenna to watch SNL each Saturday.

At Smoky Hill High School, Yang joined the improv troupe "Spontaneous Combustion." His classmates recognized his comedic talent, voting him "Most Likely to Be a Cast Member on Saturday Night Live." He was also elected prom king.

During high school, Yang went through a difficult period: his parents discovered he was gay and sent him to conversion therapy in Colorado Springs. He later called the experience "painful and detrimental." Yang explained that his parents gave him an ultimatum: either he does the conversion therapy and could attend school with his sister at New York University, or he stays at home in Denver and attends a local college. He chose NYU.

After graduating in 2008, Yang enrolled at New York University (NYU). He initially planned to become a doctor and even studied chemistry but realized his true calling was comedy. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry.

Career Beginnings

Yang began his career with small roles, including an appearance on the series Broad City in 2014. Concurrently, he developed as a comedian and writer, performing at New York City comedy clubs.

In September 2018, Yang was hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live ahead of the 44th season. Just a year later, in 2019, he was promoted to the cast for the 45th season. He became the first actor of Chinese descent in the show's history and one of the first openly gay cast members to last more than one season. His characters, often blending absurdity, wit, and a non-gimmicky portrayal of queerness, quickly made him a fan favorite. In 2021 he became the first SNL featured player to earn a Primetime Emmy nomination for acting.

In December 2025, Yang left SNL after seven seasons as a cast member. His final episode was hosted by Ariana Grande, with musical guest Cher.

Beyond SNL, Yang has appeared in several notable projects. In 2022, he starred in the LGBTQ+ romantic comedies Fire Island and Bros. He also had a recurring role in the series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.

In 2024, Yang played the role of Pfannee, one of Glinda's closest friends at Shiz University, in the film Wicked, and in 2025, he appeared in its sequel, Wicked: For Good. He also starred in the film The Wedding Banquet (2025).

Since March 2016, Yang has co-hosted the podcast Las Culturistas with his best friend, comedian Matt Rogers. The show, which focuses on pop culture, has achieved cult status, and its guests have included Lady Gaga, Tina Fey, Charli XCX, and Nicole Kidman. The podcast won Podcast of the Year at the 2023 and 2025 iHeartRadio Podcast Awards. He is the first SNL featured player to be nominated for an Emmy for acting. In 2021, he was included in Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in the world. He has also been nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award and a Critics' Choice Award.

Personal Life

Yang prefers to keep his personal life private. He has been open about his homosexuality and his experience with conversion therapy but rarely discusses his romantic relationships. In one interview, he joked that he is "perpetually single." Yang does not have children.
