Shares in taxi service Didi Global Inc ADR (NYSE:DIDI) plummeted 20% on the New York Stock Exchange premarket after Chinese authorities blocked the company's ability to get new customers and ordered mobile app shops to remove the company's app from their platforms.
Kanzhun (NASDAQ: BZ) shares fell 10% after Chinese authorities also banned the online recruitment firm from acquiring new clients until it passes a comprehensive cybersecurity risk review.
Shares in Weibo (NASDAQ:WB) soared 39% after Reuters reported that Chinese microblogging site chief Charles Chao was in talks to privatise the company, potentially valuing it at more than $20bn.
Shares in AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC) added 3.8% after the cinema chain suspended an additional 25 million shares as the plan met resistance from shareholders.
Shares in 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) were down 0.3% after Credit Suisse (SIX:CSGN) downgraded the company's stock from 'above market' to 'mid-market', saying legal and environmental concerns would hold back the stock.
American Express (NYSE:AXP) shares rose 2.4% after Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) upgraded its investment recommendation on the financial services provider's shares from 'hold' to 'buy', saying the stock could rise another 30% as the economy and consumer spending picks up.
ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) shares added 0.5%, Chevron (NYSE:CVX) shares gained 0.8%, ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) shares also gained 0.8% and Marathon Oil (NYSE:MRO) shares gained 1.2% as oil prices rose to near 7-year highs.
Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) shares lost 0.7% and BioNTech (NASDAQ:BNTX) shares lost 5.5% after a study in Israel showed a decline in the effectiveness of these drug makers' COVID-19 vaccine against the Indian delta strain. But it remains very effective in preventing serious disease.
Shares in Barclays (LON:BARC) rose 0.6% after the British bank appointed Evonne Tan, previously head of private banking at UBS Singapore, to head its private banking operations in the city-state as it seeks to grow its corporate and investment banking operations in the Asia-Pacific region.
