CDC head warned of the toughest winter in U.S. health history

There are not enough places in hospitals

According to CNN, there is a shortage of places and staff in hospitals across the country. At the same time, the demand for funeral services, which are also unable to cope with the workload, is growing dramatically.

Winter months will be the hardest months in the history of American public health, said the Director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), writes CNN.

The virologist Robert Redfield said: "I think the winter months will be the toughest in the history of public health in the United States, mainly because of the burden on the health system".

Many hospitals are already understaffed, reports CNN. In Massachusetts, authorities announced the construction of a field hospital in Lowell, encouraging residents with the right skills to go to the hospital to work.

US Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar said: "I believe that the winter months will be the most challenging in the history of public health in the United States, mainly because of the pressure on the health system".

"I think we have passed a critical point. Doctors are working, but they are broken", said the head of El Centro Southern California Regional Medical Center.
On Thursday, the hospital has only two spare beds left in the ICU and a second field hospital was built in the car park, CNN reports. The doctor compared the current situation with the fighting, pointing out that the country is "at war with COVID".

On Friday 4 December, the United States recorded the highest daily increase in new coronavirus infections since the pandemic began (227,000), according to Johns Hopkins University. The day before, a record number of deaths from infection were confirmed in the country 2.8 thousand. On the same day, a record number of hospitalizations were registered more than 100.6 thousand, according to CNN. In total, since the beginning of the pandemic in the United States, 14.5 million cases of infection have been detected and more than 281,000 people have died.
