Rachel McAdams' Surprising Career Choices: Why She Turned Down Hollywood Blockbusters

Behind the scenes with Rachel McAdams

Rachel McAdams, the renowned actress, is set to return to the silver screen in the upcoming film adaptation of Judy Blume's best-selling book, "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret."

While she has played some remarkable roles in the past, it may come as a surprise to many that she turned down roles in other blockbuster movies such as "Devil Wears Prada," "Iron Man," "Casino Royale," "Mission: Impossible III," and "Get Smart."

In a recent profile interview with Bustle, McAdams disclosed that she had taken a two-year hiatus to set boundaries for herself against what could have been an overwhelming amount of fame. While she admits to occasionally having thoughts of regret, she finds solace in the success of the actors who ultimately played the roles she declined, saying, "I step back and go, 'That was the right person for that.'"

The actress stated that she turned down the roles because they didn't quite align with her personality and what she needed to stay sane. She went on to explain that there were some anxious moments of wondering if she was making the right decision and that it took her years to understand what she intuitively was doing.

McAdams also revealed that theater school doesn't come with a guidebook on how to navigate fame, and taking breaks from acting helped her feel empowered. "It helped me feel like I was taking back some control. And I think it sort of allowed me to come in from a different doorway," she said.

Despite her busy schedule filming "Margaret," McAdams made time to pump breast milk for her 5-month-old daughter, and she hired her sister Kayleen as her makeup artist for the film so that their children could be together while the women were working.

With "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" hitting theaters on April 28, fans of McAdams can't wait to see her return to the big screen. It is evident that the actress has worked hard to achieve the balance she needs to thrive in her career and personal life, and she serves as an inspiration to many who may be struggling with similar challenges.
