Company stocks on Friday
The US stock market ended Friday's trading with gains in the commodities, consumer services and oil and gas sectors.
At the close of trading on the New York Stock Exchange, the Dow Jones rose 2.47 per cent to a one-month high, the S&P 500 rose 2.37 per cent and the Nasdaq Composite rose 2.31 per cent.
Caterpillar Inc (NYSE: CAT) shares gained 10.88p (6.07%) to close at 190.22. JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) gained 6.10p (5.25%) to close at 122.23. Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS) gained 14.29p (4.60%) to close at 325.10.
Shares of telecommunications company Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ), fell 1.65p (4.46%) to close the session at 35.35. Shares of American Express Company (NYSE: AXP) climbed 2.38p (1.67%) to close at 140.04 and Procter and Gamble Company (NYSE:P G) gained 1.59p (1.25%) to close trading at 128.58.
Shares of Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold (NYSE: FCX), which gained 9.99% to close at 32.03 and shares of Huntington Bancshares (NASDAQ: HBAN) gained 9.47% to end the session at 14.45.
Leading the fall was shares of SVB Financial Group (NASDAQ:SIVB), which declined 23.95% to close at 230.03. Shares of Robert Half International Inc (NYSE:RHI) lost 8.55% to end the session at 73.01. HCA Holdings Inc (NYSE:HCA) was down 5.69% to 196.74.
Shares of New York-based Immunic (NASDAQ: IMUX) were down 77.39% to close at 2.08.
On the New York Stock Exchange, the number of securities that gained (2,282) exceeded the number that closed at a loss (835), while the price of 104 stocks was virtually unchanged. NASDAQ saw 2,503 stocks gain, 1,265 fall and 238 remain flat.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which is derived from options trading on the S&P 500, fell 0.97% to 29.69.
Gold futures for December delivery added 1.40%, or 22.95, to reach $1.00 per troy ounce. In other commodities, WTI crude futures for December delivery rose 0.73%, or 0.62, to $85.13 a barrel. Brent crude futures for December delivery rose 1.24%, or 1.15, to $93.53 a barrel.
