About the holiday
Brief history
Alfred Nobel was born into a family of modest means in Stockholm, although his father was descended from a renowned Swedish scientist and author, Olaus or Olof Rudbeck. His father, who was an engineer, instilled in Alfred an early interest in the same field, as well as explosives. This interest bore fruit, as Nobel became interested in stabilizing nitroglycerin, an unpredictable explosive, during his teenage years. Despite the tragic death of one of his brothers in an accident related to this work, Nobel persevered, relocating his factory to a more remote location and eventually succeeding in developing dynamite, a superior and safer version of nitroglycerin.
Nobel made an even better dynamite. It was called gelignite. It helped in mining. It made him rich. He also made weapons for war. He started companies to sell them. A newspaper said he died. It criticized him for his work in war. Nobel changed his mind. He wanted to give prizes to people who were good at things. The prizes are famous. They are called Nobel Prizes. Despite criticism for his involvement in military technology, Nobel's legacy lives on through the Nobel Prizes, which continue to honor outstanding achievements in various disciplines.
