The homelessness crisis has far-reaching public health implications. People who are unhoused lack a key resource for a healthy life. New York's agencies are working together to provide safe and affordable housing that will result in improved health benefits statewide. 

I commend this collaborative effort among state agencies to ensure we provide safe and permanent supportive housing for our most vulnerable populations. These developments are an essential part of OASAS' continuum of care which enables us to support individuals live healthy and productive lives. 

The Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative provides funding for critically needed services that help individuals and families achieve housing security, financial stability and better health outcomes. This successful program complements HCR's efforts to build and preserve integrated and inclusive affordable housing developments across the state. Thanks to the ESSHI Round 6 awards, nearly 8,000 New Yorkers will have homes to call their own and access to life-saving and essential care. 

Supportive services are such a critical component of our approach to ending homelessness and ensuring all New Yorkers have access to stable housing.  By providing the most vulnerable among us with these services, we can help them address the underlying conditions that may have contributed to their housing insecurity and help them to live safely in an independent setting. I applaud Governor Hochul for strongly supporting the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative and for being a relentless advocate for those who have experienced homelessness. 

Governor Hochul's commitment to supportive housing is providing safe and stable homes with supportive services for people living with mental illness and other challenges. These awards will give individuals and families the opportunity to live independently and successfully in their own communities, which is a critical step on the road to recovery. OMH is proud to be a part of the ESSHI program and to give hope to New Yorkers in every region of the state.

Enforcement of our short-term rental laws is critical, but has been extraordinarily difficult in spite of the heroic efforts of the Mayor’s Office of Special Enforcement. So I am very pleased that Council Member Kallos, Speaker Johnson, and Mayor de Blasio worked closely with residents and housing advocates to create a registration system that will provide vital information to identify and stop illegal rentals 

Int. 2309 is our clear next step in addressing illegal short-term rentals. By requiring hosts to register short-term rentals with the City and submit their registration number to home sharing platforms before listing, this bill protects both our affordable housing and legal operators of short-term rentals. 

The Coalition Against Illegal Hotels and our city and state legislative allies have worked for years on this bill. It's been a long time coming but once it goes into effect it will make it impossible for bad actor landlords to misuse our scarce rental housing for short-term profit. Once again we prevailed over Airbnb despite all its money. They will be back in Albany next year once again trying to weaken our rental housing laws, and we are prepared to do battle with them once again. So far Airbnb is batting zero 

Housing should be for New Yorkers. Hotels should be for tourists. We need every apartment being listed illegally on Airbnb back on the market to help our affordable housing crisis. At a time when hotels are closing or sitting there empty it is crazy to see apartments all over the city getting converted into illegal Airbnbs 

Tonight’s sale of this exceptionally rare and important printing of the Constitution was a monumental and historic occasion. The Constitution needs little introduction as one of the most influential and significant historical documents ever conceived, and tonight’s result reflects how relevant it remains 234 years later--not only in America but for global democracy. 

It is my fervent wish that the new custodian of this Constitution will guard it and continue to ensure public access to the visual, physical, and emotional experience of the document. While an individual person may continue to own this Constitution, it belongs to all Americans of all genders, all colors, and religious beliefs. The Constitution is the backbone of our democracy.
