Statistics from NORC at the University of Chicago

An overwhelming majority of American people (at least 83%) believe that the US economy is in poor or deplorable condition, 35% are totally dissatisfied with their financial situation.

This is the result of an opinion poll published on Monday by the NORC at the University of Chicago for The Wall Street Journal newspaper.

The poll results show that dissatisfaction of American people with the state of economy of their country has reached the highest level since 1972.

However, only 27%, 20 pct less than in 2021, expect their standard of living to improve. At least 46% of Americans don't believe this is possible.

The number who say their financial situation has worsened in recent years was 38%. This is only comparable to the period of the financial crisis and recession of 2007-2009, the newspaper says.

It is worth noting that almost six out of every 10 American people are pessimistic about the prospects for the majority of the U.S. population to realize the "American dream". Respondents mention rising inflation as the main reason for the deplorable state of the country's economy.

According to the newspaper, such mood can affect the results of the mid-term elections to Congress in November, as the voters will blame the ruling Democratic Party for all economic problems.

The poll was conducted May 9-17 among more than a thousand adult Americans. The statistical margin of error is four percentage points.
