Hollywood Harassment Showdown
The ongoing legal battle between actress Blake Lively and her former co-star and director Justin Baldoni has reached a boiling point, with new allegations and countersuits intensifying the conflict.
According to a December 21 report by The New York Times, Lively initiated legal action against Baldoni, accusing him of sexual harassment on the set of It Ends With Us. Baldoni, who vehemently denies the accusations, swiftly retaliated by joining nine other plaintiffs in filing a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The New York Times over its reporting of the claims.
In a separate development on New Year’s Eve, Lively, 37, expanded her legal actions by suing Baldoni, 40, in federal court. The lawsuit also targets Baldoni’s production company, Wayfarer Studios, along with publicists Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel. Lively’s legal team has accused them of engaging in retaliatory tactics to undermine her credibility.
“This is not a ‘creative difference’ or ‘he said/she said’ dispute,” Lively’s lawyers asserted in a statement on January 6. “As alleged in Ms. Lively’s complaint, Wayfarer and its associates retaliated against her for simply trying to protect herself and others on set.”
The statement further criticized attempts to discredit Lively by employing “classic victim-blaming tactics,” emphasizing that sexual harassment and retaliation remain illegal across industries. “Media statements are not a defense,” her team declared, pledging to prosecute the case in court where “the rule of law determines the outcome.”
Baldoni’s attorney, Freedman, has remained equally resolute. On January 2, he told NBC News of plans to countersue Lively and release text messages between the two to “let the truth speak for itself.” Earlier, Freedman had also vowed to challenge The New York Times, labeling its reporting a “vicious smear campaign.”
Meanwhile, the Times has defended its coverage, asserting it was based on extensive documentation, including emails and text messages central to Lively’s claims. “Our story was meticulously and responsibly reported,” a spokesperson stated, underscoring the outlet’s commitment to journalistic integrity.
As the legal battle unfolds, both sides seem determined to assert their version of the truth, ensuring that this high-profile dispute will remain in the spotlight for some time to come.
