Korda's Quest for History
The 25-year-old golfer has made history by winning five consecutive tournaments, tying a record. Korda is the current world No. 1, leading in 2024 earnings, scoring average, and Player of the Year award points. She also fulfilled a childhood dream by attending the Met Gala.
This week, Korda aims to make history by becoming the first woman to secure six consecutive LPGA victories at the 72-hole Cognizant Founders Cup, hosted at the Upper Montclair Country Club starting Thursday.
Reflecting on her recent successes, Korda admitted, "If I'm being honest, I haven't had much time to dwell on it. The past two weeks have been a whirlwind for me, culminating in the incredible experience of attending the Met Gala just this Monday."
Notably, Korda's victory at The Chevron Championship in Texas marked her second major title, placing her in the esteemed company of Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) and Nancy Lopez (1978), who each achieved similar consecutive tournament victories. The golf legend Byron Nelson still holds the all-time record with 11 consecutive wins in 1945.
Despite her exceptional run, Korda remains grounded, emphasizing that looking too far ahead can be distracting. "I've learned to focus on the present moment and trust the preparation I've put in before each event," she shared.
During her brief hiatus, Korda maintained her training regimen, albeit with some much-needed rest and relaxation. "Balancing practice and downtime helps me stay sharp," she explained. "I refine my technique at home and simplify my approach during tournaments."
Korda's winning streak earned her an invite to the Met Gala. On the red carpet, she was awestruck by familiar TV and movie stars. Amidst the glamour, Korda's last-minute outfit change mirrored her adaptive golf strategy. "Stepping out of my comfort zone was exhilarating," she said.
Looking ahead to the Cognizant Founders Cup in New Jersey, Korda acknowledged her previous struggles in the state but remains optimistic. "I'm focused on the task at hand and ready to compete," she affirmed.
Pairing up with defending champion Jin-Young Ko and past winner Minjee Lee, Korda faces high expectations from golf legends Pat Bradley and Beth Daniel. Both Hall of Famers believe Korda's composure under pressure will be key to her success this week.
