Reports from companies
This week's financial reports will be released by Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Netflix, UnitedHealth, Alcoa and others. Wall Street analysts give their predictions on what investors should expect from the stock market this week.
The main market focus this week will be on the ongoing reporting season by major US banks as well as energy, industrial and consumer goods companies.
Investors will also get a chance to check how companies are coping with record inflation in the US, which reached 7% in December.
It is worth noting that this week's stock market activity will start on Tuesday, as Monday 17 January is a holiday for US stock exchanges in honour of the Martin Luther King Day holiday.
Tuesday
Goldman Sachs, Interactive Brokers, PNC Financial, Charles Schwab, Bank of New York Mellon and JB Hunt Transport will release quarterly financial reports.
Other important news, according to the Economic Calendar for investors, include:
- OPEC monthly oil market report
- Release of data on National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Real Estate Market Index (HMI)
- The release of data from the NY Empire State Manufacturing Activity Index, which measures economic growth in the manufacturing sector by surveying some 200 manufacturers in New York State.
Wednesday
Quarterly financial reports will be released by Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, Procter & Gamble, UnitedHealth, Alcoa, United Airlines, Discover Financial.
The International Energy Agency's (IEA) monthly oil market report and an important real estate report with data on new home construction in December in the US will be released.
Thursday
Expect quarterly reports from Netflix (NFLX), American Airlines and others. Weekly jobless claims report, Philadelphia Fed report, real estate market report on home sales.
Friday
Schlumberger, Ally Financial, Huntington Bancshares and others will release quarterly earnings and revenue reports.
Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers expects stock market volatility to persist in the coming weeks and tech stocks could fall again.
