Biography
Sabrina Maneca-Voinea is a Romanian artistic gymnast. She represented Romania at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Senior career
In April 2023, Voinea competed at the European Championships. She helped Romania finish fifth in the team competition. She also finished fourth on vault and won the bronze medal on floor. In October, Voinea competed at the World Championships, where the Romanian team finished 10th in qualifications and Voinea finished 4th in the floor final. At the 2024 Summer Olympics she helped Romania finish 7th in the team competition. Individually, she qualified for the beam final, finishing last and floor final, where she initially finished fifth.
Controversy surrounding scores for the individual floor event
After completing her floor routine, she was placed fourth, behind her Romanian counterpart, Ana Barbosu, she called for a review of her score by the judges and it remained unchanged. Controversy first arose because Voinea was given a penalty of 0.1 for stepping out of bounds, where in the video replay it is shown she stayed in bounds.
At the conclusion of the floor event Ana Barbosu was placed third, Voinea fourth, and Jordan Chiles fifth. Chiles' coach, Cécile Canqueteau-Landi, had filed an inquiry on Chiles' score which resulted in a review, which found that her difficulty had been entered incorrectly. It was then adjusted to 5.9 from 5.8, and the overall score was upgraded to 13.766, moving her from fifth into a bronze medal position. While score inquiries are not uncommon within gymnastics, further controversy arose when it was revealed that Voinea had received a 0.1 point deduction for going out of bounds. The replay showed that Voinea may not have gone out of bounds. If the deduction was not taken, Voinea would have scored 13.800, which would have put her in the bronze medal position even after Chiles' score was increased.
Former Romanian Olympic gymnast, Nadia Comăneci, and Mihai Covaliu, president of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, requested that Morinari Watanabe, the president of the International Gymnastics Federation, allow for Voinea's floor exercise to be re-analyzed.
The Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, stated that he would boycott the closing ceremony due to "the scandalous situation in the gymnastics, where Romanian athletes were treated in an absolutely dishonorable manner".
