Fighting Loud, Loving Strong
If you overheard a couple saying they resolve their marital issues through screaming matches, you might be inclined to suggest therapy. However, for TV host and celebrity chef Rachael Ray, these heated arguments are actually what she credits for keeping her marriage "healthy."
In the first episode of her new podcast, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead, the 56-year-old made the candid revelation that calm discussions are not the norm in her household with husband John Cusimano. Instead, the couple often engages in loud, fiery disputes. Ray explained that for passionate and outspoken people like herself and her husband, this kind of confrontation is almost inevitable.
In a candid moment during the episode, Ray opened up about the challenges faced by passionate and outspoken individuals. "It can be quite difficult for those of us with fiery personalities to dial it back," she confessed. "John and I never hold back; our intense debates often turn into full-blown shouting matches. But honestly, I believe that’s a healthy dynamic."
Ray went on to explain that she actually gets uncomfortable when things are too quiet. For her, open and immediate communication, no matter how intense, is preferable to bottling up emotions. "I prefer that you tell me what you think when you think it, and let’s just get it all out there," she added.
Surprisingly, the couple's screaming matches rarely end in apologies. Ray admitted that she and Cusimano often leave arguments unresolved in terms of saying "sorry," but this hasn’t seemed to harm their relationship. After nearly 20 years of marriage, she believes their unique way of handling conflict works for them.
The pair, who got married on September 24, 2005, will soon be celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary, showing that perhaps their loud approach to love has its merits.
