Cleese Fires Back: Idle's Claims
Monty Python legend John Cleese has responded to recent claims made by his former co-star Eric Idle, sparking renewed interest in a long-standing rift between the two comedy icons. The tension centers on the replacement of the group’s former manager, Jim Beach, with Holly Gilliam, the daughter of fellow Monty Python member Terry Gilliam. Idle alleged that Cleese’s decision to replace Beach with Gilliam was the catalyst that severed their friendship, claiming the two haven’t spoken in over seven years.
Idle took to social media to air his grievances, implying that the managerial change not only fractured their personal relationship but also exacerbated financial problems within the Monty Python group, forcing him to continue working well into his 80s. According to Idle, the Gilliam family had played a significant role in the group’s financial challenges, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth regarding how things were handled.
Cleese, however, offered a different version of events, refuting Idle’s accusations. He clarified that Beach had stepped down from his role after suffering a serious stroke, and Holly Gilliam, who had been his second-in-command for some time, naturally assumed the position. "Jim, an old Cambridge friend of mine, became our manager after the O2 show. About four years ago, he had a serious stroke and subsequently resigned from the role," Cleese explained, putting the focus on Beach’s health as the reason for his departure rather than any malicious intent.
Cleese commended Holly Gilliam as a diligent team member, noting that both Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam highly respect her work. Injecting humor into the situation, Cleese downplayed the tension with Idle, joking, "We’ve always loathed and despised each other, but only now is the truth finally out."
While friction between Cleese and Idle continues, Cleese, Palin, and Terry Gilliam were seen together at Palin’s 81st birthday, with Idle’s absence raising eyebrows. The split within the group remains evident, though Cleese's humorous take suggests reconciliation is still possible.
As Monty Python fans watch this latest chapter unfold, it’s clear that even legends of comedy are not immune to personal disagreements, although Cleese’s light-hearted approach suggests he’s ready to move past the drama. Whether or not Idle shares that sentiment remains to be seen.
