Inside Angelina Jolie's World
Angelina Jolie, 49, recently opened up in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about her personal life and future plans. She revealed she has few close friends, attributing this to losing her mother at a young age and facing betrayals over the years. Jolie reflected that her life circumstances, including her work, have shaped her relationships.
While Jolie, who shares six children with ex-husband Brad Pitt, might not have a large circle of close friends, she values the few meaningful connections she does maintain. One of these close friends is Cambodian-American human rights activist Loung Ung, whom she deeply trusts. “I don’t have a lot of those warm, close relationships as much that I lean on. But I have a few, and a few is enough,” Jolie said, adding that her late mother, Marcheline Bertrand, was another person she relied on. Bertrand passed away in 2007 after battling ovarian and breast cancer.
Jolie also expressed no reservations about keeping her inner circle small, a practice she likens to the approach of the legendary opera singer Maria Callas, whom she portrays in the upcoming biopic Maria. "I have a couple of people that I trust. What did Maria Callas die with? Two trusted people," Jolie remarked.
Jolie reflected on her impactful work with refugees in war zones, which revealed the range of human behavior, from great generosity to indifference. She also shared how living in Cambodia gave her a deep sense of connection.
Jolie's views on friendship are rooted in her experiences. She previously expressed similar sentiments during an interview with WSJ Magazine in December, where she noted that she doesn't have much of a social life in Los Angeles. Instead, her closest friends are those who have survived war and conflict. "Maybe four out of six of the women that I am close to are from war and conflict," she said at the time.
Jolie also discussed family life amid her divorce from Brad Pitt. Despite living in Los Angeles, she plans to leave once her children are older. "As soon as they’re 18, I’ll be able to leave," she said, referring to her 16-year-old twins. She hopes to spend more time in Cambodia and visiting family worldwide.
Angelina Jolie’s reflections offer a glimpse into her world, from her dedication to family and humanitarian work to the rare but treasured friendships she holds dear.
