Transfer to Real
Kylian Mbappe, the 25-year-old soccer sensation, recently confirmed his switch from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid. This move came ahead of Euro 2024 and amidst whispers about his future. However, this transfer has had an unexpected consequence it has barred him from playing in the Paris Olympics this summer.
Real Madrid’s Stance on the Olympics
Real Madrid has firmly decided against allowing a trio of French stars Mbappe, Aurelien Tchouameni, and Eduardo Camavinga from joining the under-23s Olympic squad. This squad also includes spots for older players. When asked about this, Mbappe, now a hotshot in La Liga, expressed understanding towards his club’s position. “My club’s position is very clear and I understand that,” he said. “I will not be there. I understand my club’s position as I am a newcomer. I hope we win the Games.”
Mbappe’s Focus on Euro 2024
With his sights set on Euro 2024, Mbappe is all about securing victories this summer. He brushes off any fitness worries, stating, “I’m ready to win, it’s more of a mental issue. My head is perfect, now let’s see how my legs are.”
Uncertainty Over Mbappe’s Position in the Tournament
As France gears up to start their campaign on Monday against Austria, Mbappe’s position in the upcoming tournament remains uncertain. He could play as a striker or winger. The team faces a challenging group that includes the Netherlands and Poland. The Netherlands have already set a high bar with a 2-1 victory, courtesy of goals from Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst, putting the pressure on Les Bleus to deliver a comparable performance. However, Mbappe is open to playing in any position. “I have spoken with the coach and he has told me that I can play in several positions this time and that it is not a problem. It doesn’t matter where I play because I am ready to play and adapt,” he said.
The Financial Aspect of the Transfer
Mbappe’s transfer to the Champions League victors was anything but cheap, despite being a free transfer. He signed a five-year deal earning $16.2 million annually, in addition to a substantial signing bonus rumored to be between $130 million and $162 million.
