About the holiday

Brief history

People have probably been dancing to music for as long as music has existed. The earliest traces of dancing that archeologists have found date back to at least 7,000 B.C., and it's likely that dancing precedes that time.

Humans have a natural instinct to move our bodies in unique ways, and that's just how it's always been. As dance has evolved throughout history and around the world, choreographers have created, planned, and taught dances. In recent years, with the advent of the term "choreographer," planned dances have become a big part of musical theatre, movies, TV, and more.

For the past 70 years or so, choreographers have won recognition on Broadway with the Tony Awards. Other awards in the US include the Emmy for Outstanding Choreography and the MTV Music Video Award for Best Choreography.

This year, International Choreographers' Day is a chance to recognize and celebrate all the people who have created dances, moves, and techniques for years.
