About the holiday

Brief history

The World Science Day celebrates the good things that science has done for people. The day is about understanding how science and technology help us. In 1999, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Council of Science had a meeting in Hungary. They talked about how important it is to teach people about science. They decided to have a special day for science.

At the meeting, people made a plan called Science Agenda. A year later, the leaders of UNESCO made the World Science Day. In 2001, they started to talk about science more often. Scientists told people about new discoveries and how to make the world a better place. In 2002, they celebrated the first World Science Day with a lot of people. Schools, colleges, universities, and other organizations joined together to help teach people about science.

How to Celebrate

On World Science Day, don’t be a lab coat and beaker! Go outside and play with nature. Look for bugs in your garden or park. Watch ants forage, spiders spin webs, and beetles hide under stones. It’s fun to meet the little creatures on our planet. In your kitchen, make some simple science experiments. Make a volcano with soda and vinegar. Or make slime with cornstarch and water. These are not just games, they make you curious and want to learn. At night, look at stars with a telescope or an app. You can see the moon and Saturn. If you don’t have a telescope, use an app to find the constellations. This is a great way to see how big the universe is. Have a debate about science. Talk about energy or genetics. This helps you think about science and understand it better. Science is not just in books. It’s in the world around us. On World Science Day, learn and have fun with science!
