Teachers Day
Almost everyone has a teacher they admire, someone who went the extra mile to inspire them because they saw their potential. On October 5, take a moment to celebrate World Teachers’ Day — a global event initiated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1994. Just as Matilda had Ms. Honey, Harry had Dumbledore, and Cady had Ms. Norbury, perhaps you are a teacher working hard to help young people learn and grow. Given that teachers shape the future, taking a day each year to express gratitude is the least we can do. Regardless of where you are in the world today, remember that teachers are important!
About the holiday
Brief History
This holiday is about the 1966 recommendation from UNESCO about teachers. It says what teachers should do and what they should have. It also says how to be a good teacher. In 2020, UNESCO wants to say that teachers are very important. They want governments to make teachers a good job for young people. They also want to say thank you to all the teachers who work hard to give good education to everyone. The event will be in Paris on October 7.
Importance of Teachers
Teachers are the backbone of any educational system. They not only transmit knowledge but also instil values, develop skills and foster a love for learning in their students. Teachers play a vital role in shaping young minds and preparing them for the challenges of the future.
How to celebrate
There are various ways to celebrate World Teachers Day:
- Gift your teacher: Show your appreciation by giving your teacher a thoughtful gift. It could be something handmade, a certificate or a voucher to a bookstore.
- Organise a classroom event: Throw a classroom event in honour of your teacher. This could be a concert, a dance or a play that your class puts on.
- Post teacher appreciation messages: Share messages of gratitude for your teacher on social media. This could be a simple "thank you" or a more elaborate message that expresses your appreciation.
