Last year, the entrepreneur had already declared his readiness to sell all his assets. Explaining his decision then, Musk said: "Property just drags you down". The media linked such plans of the businessman to his move to Texas.
SpaceX founder and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who became the world's richest man on Thursday, January 7, decided to sell off all his assets to colonize Mars.
"In fact, I will have almost no property of monetary value left except company shares", Elon said.
The businessman said his plan to build a city on Mars would require a significant investment. According to him, this is one of the reasons that may force him to part with his property. Another reason, Musk said, is a desire to show the world how determined he is when it comes to colonizing Mars.
After Musk overtook Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in the list of the world's richest people, he changed his Twitter page to a fixed post. There, he posted his entry, dated 2018, in which he pledged to give half of his fortune to build a city on Mars.
Musk has previously said that he plans to send 1 million people to Mars by 2050 and build a fleet of 1,000 starships to ferry them there. For those who cannot afford to fly to Mars, Musk has said that it is ready to provide loans as well as jobs on the Red Planet.
