Middle-earth’s New Frontier
The Lord of the Rings universe continues to expand, with new projects on the horizon. Prime Video’s prequel series The Rings of Power is already making waves, and The War of the Rohirrim is set to release later this year. Fans also have The Hunt for Gollum, a live-action film produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Andy Serkis, to look forward to. Serkis, famously known for his portrayal of Gollum in Jackson’s original trilogy, is at the helm of this exciting new chapter.
With the announcement of another Lord of the Rings film, speculation has naturally arisen about the return of the original cast. Viggo Mortensen, known for his role as Aragorn, has expressed interest in reprising his iconic character. “I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing him, and I enjoyed it a lot,” Mortensen shared with GQ, though he admitted he's still in the dark about the storyline.
Ian McKellen has also shown enthusiasm for returning as Gandalf, saying he’s happy to take up the staff once again, as long as he's able. However, not all of the original cast shares the same sentiment. Hugo Weaving, who portrayed the noble elf Elrond in six films, seems ready to close the door on Middle-earth.
Weaving has made it clear that his time as Elrond is over, citing both personal and practical reasons. He reflected on the challenges of playing an immortal character while aging himself, noting that even during The Hobbit reshoots, it felt “slightly silly.” Though digital de-aging might offer a solution, Weaving seems firm in his decision to leave the role behind.
As The Hunt for Gollum moves through development, it will be interesting to see if any familiar faces ultimately return, though fans can expect fresh takes and new adventures.
