Fashioning Freedom
Diane von Furstenberg, a name synonymous with innovation in the fashion industry, is a beacon of self-assuredness and authenticity. Her philosophy is simple yet profound, “If you are true to yourself, you are free. If you are not true to yourself, you are not free, no matter where you go.”
Von Furstenberg’s journey is a testament to her belief in authenticity. Born in Brussels and now 77 years old, she has spent a lifetime in the fashion industry, captivating audiences with her unique designs. Her most notable contribution is the wrap dress, a design that revolutionized women’s fashion half a century ago. This waist-accentuating dress remains in production today, with over a million sold by 1976.
Her life, both personal and professional, is explored in depth in the Hulu documentary, “Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge.” The film delves into her early days in the fashion industry, her struggle to establish her company, and her battle with tongue cancer in 1994. Von Furstenberg believes her illness was a result of not being able to express herself, a realization that led her to reclaim her business.
The documentary also offers a glimpse into von Furstenberg’s personal life. It recounts her relationships, including her marriage to Prince Egon von Furstenberg and her lasting love with former Paramount Pictures CEO Barry Diller, whom she married in 2001. It also highlights her mother’s significant influence on her life. Her mother, Liliane Halfin, a survivor of Auschwitz, instilled in her the courage to face life’s challenges head-on.
Halfin’s teachings have been a guiding force in von Furstenberg’s life. She taught her daughter to embrace responsibility and not to fear the dark. These lessons have shaped von Furstenberg’s approach to life and are reflected in her mantras: “Be true to yourself, don’t play the victim, and fear is not an option. Enjoy the journey of your life and most importantly, honor life.”
Reflecting on her life, von Furstenberg acknowledges the fullness of her experiences. She views her life as a canvas, colored by her experiences, mistakes, triumphs, and lessons. She believes in the power of sharing her journey honestly, as it can inspire others to embrace their own journeys with authenticity and courage. As she puts it, “It’s the journey of my life, and sharing that journey if done honestly, can be inspiring.”
