Debbie McGee Speaks Out
In an unexpected development, Giovanni Pernice, a veteran professional dancer from the popular show Strictly Come Dancing, will not be part of the forthcoming season. This decision has ignited a series of responses, including a heartfelt endorsement from Debbie McGee, a past contestant.
Since 2015, Pernice has been a fixture on Strictly Come Dancing. His absence coincides with a period of increased scrutiny over his coaching methods, which have been the subject of numerous allegations.
Several celebrities who have previously participated in the show have expressed discomfort regarding Pernice’s behavior during their tenure. The BBC unveiled the professional cast for the upcoming season on June 10, with Pernice’s name conspicuously absent.
McGee, who teamed up with Pernice in 2017, voiced her disappointment on social media. She said, “The news of Giovanni not continuing on the show has left me heartbroken. My time on Strictly was transformative and filled with joy. Gio helped me navigate my grief and instilled in me a confidence I never thought possible.”
This is not the first time McGee has come to Pernice’s defense. When the initial allegations emerged in January, she highlighted her positive experience with him, reminiscing about the “best of times” she had during the competition.
The controversy surrounding Pernice began when his 2023 partner, Amanda Abbington, withdrew from the show for “personal reasons.” She later characterized their rehearsals as “tense,” which led to an investigation. In a recent interview, Abbington accused Pernice of being “awful” towards former contestants.
In March, more allegations came to light, with Ranvir Singh and Laura Whitmore reportedly recounting emotional experiences while working with Pernice. Both hosts described their training sessions with him as demanding and intense.
Pernice has categorically denied all allegations of abusive or threatening behavior. In May, he expressed his astonishment at the accusations to the media.
The BBC is currently compiling evidence for a potential investigation in response to serious complaints lodged by law firm Carter-Ruck on behalf of Amanda Abbington. As Strictly Come Dancing prepares to return this autumn with familiar faces on the judging panel and dance floor, fans will undoubtedly feel the absence of Giovanni Pernice.
