Bayern's New Era
Vincent Kompany is on the verge of becoming Bayern Munich’s new manager and has reportedly set his sights on a ‘very unhappy’ Manchester City star as his first transfer target.
Kompany is set to be appointed as the new Bayern boss following talks on Wednesday. This appointmentcomes after he earned promotion to the Premier League with Burnley last season, although they were relegated soon after.
The Belgian’s entire backroom staff is expected to follow him to Bayern, who have faced challenges in their search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel. After unsuccessful attempts to hire Xabi Alonso and Ralf Rangnick, Bayern is now prepared to welcome Kompany. Kompany has previously managed Anderlecht and enjoyed great success as a player, captaining Manchester City.
Kompany Targets ‘Very Unhappy’ City Star
John Stones, who played alongside Kompany at the heart of City’s defence, is reportedly the manager’s primary transfer target for Bayern. Kompany is a ‘huge admirer’ of Stones, who is said to be “very unhappy” with his lack of playing time under Pep Guardiola this season.
Stones has struggled with injuries, but his return to fitness has not resulted in more game time. He started just one Premier League game between March and the end of the season and made only 25 appearances in all competitions throughout the campaign.
Stones Worried Over England Future
Despite being a likely starter for England at the European Championships this summer, Stones is reportedly concerned about his long-term future with the national team if he remains at City.
Stones moved to the Etihad in 2016 from Everton for £47 million and has made 256 appearances for the club, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and the Champions League. He was instrumental in City’s treble last season, often playing in midfield rather than defence. This versatility is likely one of the qualities that attract Bayern, who already have England internationals Harry Kane and Eric Dier in their squad.
