Calendar for the week
The main stock market event this week will be the inflation report for January. However, economists are forecasting a new record of 7.2%.
Last week the S&P 500 rose 1.55% to close at 4500, the Dow Jones rose 1.05% and the Nasdaq Composite added 2.38% over the week, but the index is 13% below its all-time high.
The report on Friday 4 February on the US labour market growth in January 2022 beat economists' estimates, Luke Tilley, chief economist at Wilmington Trust, believes that inflation will peak in February and start to decline in the following months.
Reports on Monday
Companies such as Softbank Corp., Fiserv, KKR and Co., Zimmer Biomet, Gartner Inc., Warner Music Group, Paycom Software, Omnicom Group and many others will report quarterly results.
Also, the Federal Reserve will release consumer credit data for December.
Tuesday
Earnings and profits report: Pfizer, Walt Disney, CVS Health, S&P Global Inc., Exelon, International Flavors and Fragrances, Masco Corp., Coherent Inc. and others.
The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) will publish a small business optimism index for January. The forecast estimate is 98, which is slightly lower than the figure for December.
The Bureau of Economic Analysis will release international trade data: exports and imports and the trade balance for December.
Wednesday
Coca-Cola Co., Motorcar Parts of America, Forward Air Corp., CME Group, Moody's, Datadog Inc., Zebra Technologies, PG&E and others.
Data will be released on wholesale sales in December, as well as inventory levels at wholesale warehouses.
Speakers will include Michelle Bowman, member of the Board of Governors of the Fed, and Loretta Mester, president of the Cleveland Fed.
Thursday
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the consumer price index (inflation rate) for January.
The Labor Department reports initial claims for unemployment benefits for the week ending February 5.
The monthly US federal budget execution report for January.
PepsiCo, Duke Energy, Cloudflare, Green Plains, American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings, First American Financial Corp., Goodyear Tire and Rubber and others.
Friday
Reports will be released by: Dominion Energy, Under Armour, Newmark Group, AllianceBernstein, Newell Brands and others.
The University of Michigan will release a consumer sentiment survey for February.
