Christmas
Every year on December 25, we celebrate Christmas a day when we gather with our families to observe an important Christian holiday, participate in cheerful traditions, or simply spread some holiday cheer! People decorate their homes with twinkling lights and beautiful ornaments, exchange gifts, and enjoy a festive feast. Many also attend church services to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ.
About the holiday
Brief history
Christians believe that Jesus Christ, the son of God, was born on Christmas. However, we are not sure exactly when or where he was born. The Bible does not mention the date. The first Christian historians chose December 25 as the date for Christmas. They wanted to connect the birth of Jesus with the rebirth of the sun. Some people think that the date was chosen because it was after the winter solstice. Others believe that it was because Jesus was conceived on March 25 and his birth occurred nine months later. Once, January 6 was the date for Jesus' baptism. But by the 9th century, it had become a minor holiday.
The Europeans initiated some of the customs we now observe. In Strasbourg, individuals began to adorn fir trees with apples. In the 17th and 18th centuries, they began to exchange gifts. By the 19th century, they had transitioned to using four candles instead of the traditional 24. The Christmas customs spread to other nations.
How it's celebrated
Christmas is celebrated in various ways around the world. In some countries, it is a religious holiday, while in others, it is more secular. On Christmas Day, many families gather for a festive meal. Traditional dishes include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Children open gifts from Santa Claus or their parents and grandparents. In some countries, there are special Christmas markets where people can buy gifts, food, and decorations.
