Radio Day
On August 20, we will be broadcasting to you on all frequencies for National Radio Day. Radio, a remarkable technology once used by militaries and governments for navigation and news dissemination, has made news and music more accessible and brought us closer as a nation and planet. Although we now rely more on the internet and television than on radio, radio is still far from being obsolete, and is increasingly valued for its vintage and exceptional content.
About the holiday
Brief History
People can celebrate National Radio Day to appreciate the importance of radio in modern society. Although some may think that radio is old-fashioned, it is still an important tool, especially for local communities. Heinrich Hertz, a German physicist, first identified radio waves in 1886. It took Marconi, an Italian inventor, about three decades to develop a practical receiver. Marconi's work paved the way for the future of radio communication. Radio began its commercial use in the early 1900s, and 20 years later it was so popular that people bought radios for their homes. National Radio Day was celebrated in the United States and other countries since the early 1990s. August 20 was chosen as the date to honor the first broadcast of Detroit radio station 8MK (now WWJ) in 1920, although it was not the first station in the US. NPR (National Public Radio) brought attention to the day in 2011, and its popularity grew. Now, National Radio Day is celebrated throughout the nation.
