Description
SMART, the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers, is one of North America’s most dynamic and diverse unions with 203,000 members. SMART’s members produce and provide the vital services that move products to market, passengers to their destinations and ensure the quality of the air we breathe. We are sheet metal workers, service technicians, bus operators, engineers, conductors, sign workers, welders, production employees and more. With members in scores of different occupations, we advocate for fairness in the workplace, excellence at work and opportunity for all working families.
SMART has approximately 700 local unions and councils in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The International Union, based in Washington, DC and Cleveland, Ohio coordinates the union’s activity on behalf of the membership. The International also provides resources to affiliated local unions for organizing, bargaining, political action and education, while administering members-only benefits through our affiliated funds. Every five years, delegates to our International Convention gather to elect the International Union’s General President, General Secretary-Treasurer and members of the General Executive Council comprised of representatives from across the broad spectrum of the industries we represent.
History
SMART’s history includes the legacies of the Sheet Metal Workers’ International Association (SMWIA) and the United Transportation Union (UTU), two predecessor organizations that merged in January of 2008. Combined, these unions hold over 200 years of history and tradition. This history continues today with you, as part of the current generation of SMART members living and working in cities and communities across North America.
