Biography
Derek Stein, Senior Managing Director, is Global Head of Technology & Operations. This group is responsible for the firm's worldwide operations across all asset classes and geographies. The operational functions are aligned with clients, products, fund structures and our third party provider networks. He also serves as a member of the Global Executive Committee and is the President and CEO of BlackRock Institutional Trust Company, N.A.
Career
Mr. Stein's service with the firm dates back to 2005, including his years with Barclays Global Investors (BGI), which merged with BlackRock in 2009. At BGI, Mr. Stein served as Chief Information Officer, responsible for all aspects of BGI's operations and technology services. Before joining BGI, Mr. Stein was an executive vice president at Knight Capital, overseeing operations, technology, strategy and risk management. In addition, he led Knight's Electronic Services business. Prior to that, Mr. Stein spent 10 years with Merrill Lynch & Co. where he was a senior director responsible for the management and coordination of Merrill Lynch's institutional global services organization across fixed income and equities, infrastructure investments and e-commerce operations. Earlier, he spent several years as a senior manager with Ernst and Young's capital markets and banking management consulting practice. Before moving to the U.S. from South Africa, Mr. Stein managed a long/short equity fund and was a practicing Chartered Accountant.
Education
Mr. Stein earned a BA degree in computer science and an MS degree in finance, both from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa.
