Brief history

Educational technology, also known as EduTech or EdTech, has a long history that dates back to cave paintings. However, it was only in the early 20th century that machines such as the Gestetner stencil and mimeograph were introduced. These devices allowed for the creation of short print runs for home and classroom use. Since then, many advances have been made in educational technologies. In the 1950s, slide projectors were widely used in educational institutions. In the mid-60s, two Stanford University professors, Richard Atkinson and Patrick Suppes, began experimenting with using computers to teach spelling and arithmetic to elementary school students via Teletypes. The University of Illinois was the first to start online education in the 1960s, even before the invention of the Internet. In 1986, the first online course was offered, provided by the Electronic University Network. Today, 80% of students earn two-thirds of their Bachelor's degree requirements online. One in three college students take at least one online course. One of the vital forerunners to modern educational technologies is videoconferencing. This was especially important in museum education. In 1994, the first online high school was founded. Today, many students embrace distance learning, especially after the Coronavirus outbreak. It's crazy to think about how times have changed!
