Talk Like A Pirate Day

Yar harrr! Ahoy there ye lily livered blaggards! It be Talk Like a Pirate Day, and that means it’s time for pillaging and the imbibing of rum! Pirates have been all the rage in recent years and out of that particular fascination came an insane and completely pirate-oriented idea: that there should be a day dedicated to keeping the piratical language alive and, more importantly, the tradition of all things related to pirates. So Talk Like a Pirate Day was invented. And now it’s time to celebrate with all of the pirate talk that can be mustered in one day!

About the holiday

Brief History

It was the sixth of June, 1995, and a group of men were playing racquetball in Albany, Oregon. They were cheering each other on throughout the game. On that day, for reasons unknown to them, they began using pirate slang to encourage each other. The practice took on a life of its own, and by the end of the game, they realized the need for a holiday to celebrate the use of this unique language. They needed a date, and they chose the birthday of his ex-wife. For the next seven years, they celebrated this holiday in relative obscurity, until they came across the email address of Dave Barry, a syndicated columnist and author of numerous books. Barry was also a hilarious individual, just like any good pirate should be. From there, the holiday gained popularity, and it has been an amazing year after year as people across the country celebrate this special day.

How is it celebrated

Well, for starters, it's just plain fun! Putting on a pirate accent and saying things like "Arr, matey!" can be a lot of laughs. Plus, it's a chance to show off your love of all things nautical, from parrots to one-legged seamen. There are plenty of ways to get in on the fun. Here are a few ideas:

  • Dress up as a pirate or just wear a cool nautical-themed shirt or hat.
  • Say pirate-y things like "Aye, matey!" or "Arr, me hearties!"
  • Watch a pirate movie or read a pirate book.
  • Eat pirate food like beans on toast or pirate biscuits.
  • Go to a pirate festival or just have a pirate-themed party at home.
