About the holiday

Brief History

The origins of Building and Code Appreciation Day are unknown. But the day was created to show respect for this industry. If you know someone who works in construction or coding, they will tell you that they don't get enough appreciation.

The first building code was created in Babylon by King Hammurabi in 1758 BC. It tells how to design and build, and how to ensure that workers do their jobs well. Then, in 1625, construction codes were created in America. They specified what materials could be used for roofing and how to protect against fire. By 1940, there were three codes in America. These were then combined into one code called the International Code of Safety (ICC) in 1989. The first international codes were created in 2000.

People who work on buildings and codes ensure that buildings are safe. They must pay attention to detail and be trained. If something goes wrong, lives could be at risk. Not many people are aware of these workers, but today is a day to show our gratitude.

This year, September 1st is Building and Code Appreciation Day. You can celebrate with your colleagues or wear a smile when you go to work. If you do not know anyone who works on construction or coding projects, today is an opportunity to show them your appreciation.
