About the holiday

Brief History

History Vinyl records, also known as phonograph records, store music on a flat disc with a grooved spiral. They were invented in 1957 by Leon Scott, who recorded sound waves onto a sheet of paper with a stylus. This wasn't for playback but for analysis. In 1877, Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, allowing playback. There's no proof that Edison's invention was inspired by Scott's. Gary Freiberg from Los Osos, CA, created National Vinyl Record Day to honor Edison's invention. He encourages everyone to look back and remember the good times with vinyl.
