Barbershop Music Appreciation Day

Barbershop Music Appreciation Day

On July 13, the harmonious strains of barbershop music remind us that it’s National Barbershop Music Appreciation Day. This annual celebration honors the art of a cappella barbershop singing—a unique genre distinguished by its rich, vocal-only harmonies. Unlike National Barbershop Quartet Day, which focuses specifically on quartets, this day embraces the broader spectrum of barbershop music, inviting people from all walks of life to join in. Performances often span various settings, from intimate gatherings to public events, showcasing melodies that evoke a sense of nostalgia and authenticity. In today’s pop culture landscape, this day offers a cherished blend of beauty and traditional charm.

About the holiday

Brief History of the Holiday

Although barbershop music is often associated with the US, it actually has its roots in England, where the term "barber's music" was used. But another theory suggests that barbershop music emerged in the US during the 19th century, when barber shops were community gathering spots where a cappella singing was popular. In 2005, the Sweet Adelines International organized National Barbershop Music Appreciation Day to celebrate their 60th anniversary. They started back in 1945 with a group of women married to barber shop singers who shared a passion for singing. Over the years, Sweet Adelines has grown from a small group to a global organization dedicated to promoting barbershop through education and visibility. The goal of the day is not only to commemorate the anniversary of Sweet Adelines, but also to raise awareness and appreciation for barbershop and its quartets.

How It's Celebrated

National Barbershop Music Appreciation Day is celebrated through various events and activities that showcase barbershop music. These may include live performances by barbershop quartets and choruses, community sing-alongs, and special concerts. Fans and groups often organize events to perform and enjoy barbershop music, sharing their passion with others. Educational workshops and demonstrations might be held to teach new enthusiasts about the art of barbershop singing and its techniques. Social media is also a platform for sharing recordings, stories, and experiences related to barbershop music.
