March 2021, Apollo Global Management announced plans to merge with Athene Holding, the life insurance company. The merger values Athene at $11 billion. Since it was founded in 2009, Athene has been backed by Apollo. Athene went public in 2016 and had a market capitalization of just over $10 billion. Prior to the merger announcement, Apollo already owned 35% of Athene. The deal is expected to close in January 2022. The combined entity will have a market cap of $29 billion, making it eligible for inclusion in the S&P 500 index.
