Screen Rant is an entertainment website that offers news in the fields of television, films, video games, and film theories. It is owned by Valnet Inc., parent of publications including Comic Book Resources, Collider, MovieWeb and XDA Developers.
History
Screen Rant was launched by Vic Holtreman in 2003, and originally had its primary office in Ogden, Utah. Screen Rant has expanded its coverage with red-carpet events in Los Angeles, New York film festivals and San Diego Comic-Con panels. The associated YouTube channel was created on August 19, 2008, and has 8.62M subscribers and 5.4K videos as of June 21, 2023.
In February 2015, Screen Rant was acquired by Valnet Inc., an online media company based in Montreal, Quebec. It was reunited with its sister site, Game Rant, in 2019, when Valnet acquired the other publication.
The channel previously hosted a video series called Pitch Meetings by YouTube comedian Ryan George, who produced over 200 videos by September 2020, which had garnered 250 million views. The series continues to be owned and hosted by Screen Rant on its own separate Pitch Meetings channel on YouTube. In the series, George plays both a screenwriter and a film producer doing a pitch on a movie or series through a detailed plot summary, that highlights plot holes, loose ends and questionable character decisions. The series started out as a 20 second skit uploaded to Ryan George's personal YouTube channel on November 22, 2017 which made fun of Justice League which had just been released. At the time, George had already been working for Screen Rant, and they asked him if he had any new video series ideas, and he told them that he thinks he could expand on this video format. George stated that the series was inspired by a bit from comedian John Mulaney where he talked about how weird it would have been to sell the movie Back to the Future, in which Mulaney played a screenwriter and film producer.
