Description
When we look back at the rich history of the Rochester and Monroe County YWCA, we see a social justice organization that has been fulfilling its mission for more than 130 years as a powerful resource for women and children in its community. Part of today's task is to make sure that the community understands exactly how we fulfill the mission of eliminating racism and empowering women, and why it is so important to do both.
The fundamental belief of the YWCA is that women cannot be empowered unless issues of race and racism are addressed. Each year, the community serves more than 1,200 women and families through our housing and youth services programs, most of whom are women of color and girls. Women served by the community face obstacles to both gender and racial discrimination, which is what makes racial equality so critically important.
